In an interview with the College of Letters & Science, HWNI member Andrew Dillin discusses his efforts to translate basic research discoveries into treatments and cures for patients, particularly by creating the new Center for Unmet, Rare and Emerging Diseases (CURED) at UC Berkeley. CURED will focus on diseases that lack attention from other researchers, and will develop new technologies that could have broad impacts across both rare diseases and more common ones.
In the interview, Dillin, a professor of molecular and cell biology, also discusses his research on aging and aging-related disease, including neurodegeneration; the Robinson Life Science, Business, and Entrepreneurship Program, which he co-directs; and how he has helped develop a new curriculum focused on connecting molecular and cell biology concepts to real-world medicine.
