A new study published in Science Advances from the lab of HWNI member Andrew Dillin, led by Neuroscience PhD alum Julian Dishart, has found that in the nematode C. elegans, odors from pathogens trigger the nervous system to activate a mitochondrial stress response in the gut, in preparation for a possible attack. The Dillin lab is currently exploring whether this protective mechanism also occurs in mammals. Neuroscience PhD student Madison Webb is one of co-authors on the paper.
