HWNI member Helen Bateup, associate professor of neuroscience and molecular and cell biology, has received a 2025 Distinguished Teaching Award, UC Berkeley’s highest honor for teaching excellence. Only five UC Berkeley instructors were chosen by the Academic Senate’s Committee on Teaching to receive the award this year.
The committee highlighted how Bateup incorporates current research into her teaching about neuroscience and demonstrates how it can be applied in the real world, which one student said was “empowering” and “spurred lively discourse.”
They also noted that Bateup strives to create a kind and inclusive learning environment where neurological diseases “which have affected many students personally, can be discussed openly and addressed from a biological standpoint.”
