HWNI member John Clarke, emeritus professor of physics and Nobel laureate, was inducted into the Achievement Museum of the American Academy of Achievement and honored with their Golden Plate Award at the Academy's 56th Annual International Achievement Summit in June 2026.
The American Academy of Achievement brings together accomplished leaders from across the sciences, arts, public service, business, and athletics with exceptional students from around the world. The Golden Plate Award is among their highest honors, recognizing individuals whose achievements have made lasting contributions to science, scholarship, public service, and society.
Clarke won the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on quantum tunneling, which laid the foundation for quantum computing. He shared the prize with Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis, who worked with Clarke at UC Berkeley. As part of his research, Clarke worked on using a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and he collaborated with scientists at HWNI's Henry H. Wheeler, Jr. Brain Imaging Center and others at Berkeley on MRI for brain imaging.
