Researchers awarded $4.5 million to study connection between circadian rhythms and bipolar disorder

December 28, 2024

A collaborative research project led by HWNI member Lance Kriegsfeld, professor of neuroscience and psychology, has received a $4.5 million Discovery Grant for Research in Bipolar Disorder from BD² (Breakthrough Discoveries for thriving with Bipolar Disorder). The researchers will investigate the connection between circadian disruption, dopamine, the brain’s reward system, and bipolar disorder.

HWNI member Linda Wilbrecht, professor of neuroscience and psychology, is a co-principal investigator on the study, which involves a broad team doing research at multiple sites. This project could advance understanding of bipolar disorder and potentially identify new biological and psychological treatment targets.
