Walter J. Freeman III Used Mathematics to Explore the Brain

Walter J. Freeman III, a neuroscientist, applied mathematics to explore the workings of the brain. At times, he strayed into philosophy.

Dr. Freeman died April 24 at age 89 of pulmonary fibrosis at his home in Berkeley, Calif. He was a professor emeritus of molecular and cell biology at the University of California, Berkeley.
