Celebrating the launch of the campus’ new Department of Neuroscience, Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute (HWNI) co-founders Carla Shatz and Corey Goodman, along with Goodman’s wife Marcia Barinaga, have made gifts to endow a major annual lectureship in neuroscience at UC Berkeley.
The Carla & Corey Lectureship will bring outstanding neuroscientists to campus to share their research and to engage with our deeply interdisciplinary scientific community, across the breadth of mind and brain science. The director of HWNI will direct how to spend the lectureship funds, in consultation with the chair of the Department of Neuroscience. The series is due to begin in 2025.
Shatz and Goodman, both UC Berkeley faculty members at the time, co-founded Berkeley’s neuroscience institute in 1997, and served as its first directors. Together, they worked with Berkeley alumna and world champion tennis star Helen Wills to leave her estate to the university, endowing and naming the institute. Shatz is now a professor at Stanford, while Goodman is an adjunct professor in HWNI and life sciences venture capital leader.
We are grateful for their generous and continued support of neuroscience at UC Berkeley!
